Independent family owned business Alexanders of Markethill set to celebrate 70 years
Step into the rich history of Alexanders of Markethill, where family values and a deep-rooted tradition have shaped the Market House premises since its construction in 1835 by the first Earl of Gosford. Built as a market house selling linen and all kinds of things for the village, it has served many purposes over the years having been a coal store, a joinery shop and even at one time a dance hall.
Now the beloved centerpiece is home to one of the village’s longest reigning and much loved family businesses, Alexanders of Markethill.
While the building pre-dates the business by 119 years, Alexanders of Markethill was founded in 1954 by the dynamic duo Norman and Iris Alexander, who had previously run a small shop in neighbouring Tandragee. Now the beloved family-owned business celebrates seven decades trading which started from a humble first sale by Norman in July 1954 - a bicycle bell.
The family’s connections to Tandragee ties them to one of Northern Ireland’s local treasures - Tayto crisps, with Norman’s sister and her husband forming the Tayto Group, based at Tandragee Castle.
What started as a humble hardware store quickly transformed into a one-stop-shop for all your needs, ranging from everyday essentials like buckets and spades to more unique items like gramophones, gas cylinders and agricultural equipment.
Iris Alexander, who was born in Canada, grew up in Gracehill outside Ballymena, played a pivotal role in expanding the business by curating an exquisite collection of giftware. With her keen eye for quality, she secured partnerships with renowned companies such as Wedgewood, Waterford Crystal, and Villeroy and Boch.
Following a chance encounter with a sales representative at a trade show, Iris purchased 100 Old Country Rose tea sets which flew off the shelves. This led to one of her proudest moments which was securing an account with Royal Doulton.
Gaining the respect of prestigious brands added a touch of elegance and sophistication to Alexanders' offerings, making it a go-to destination for those seeking exquisite gifts.
Meanwhile, Norman Alexander focused on developing the furniture, carpet, and bedding departments. With his expertise and dedication, he ensured that Alexanders of Markethill became synonymous with top-notch home furnishings. Customers came to rely on Alexanders to provide them with the perfect pieces to create a cozy and stylish living space.
Now in the capable hands of sisters Suzanne Laverty and Johanne Maxwell, along with Suzanne's daughter Katie Rush, the business is now served by its second and third generation and continues to thrive.
While Suzanne previously lectured in tourism at the University of Ulster, sister Johanne graduated in accountancy the pair grew up in the store assisting their parents for many years and have played a vital role in developing Alexanders into the thriving business it is today. Their dedication and passion have been instrumental in carrying forward the family legacy.
A complete refurbishment of the building over an 18-month period commenced in 2003 which saw the café area which was previously on the ground floor, relocate to the first floor increasing seating capacity to 96. Also incorporated into the refurbishment were a new cook shop and interior design department.
Further changes came in May 2017 when the restaurant area was further modernised but perhaps the biggest change was a new roof - replacing the previous one of 200 years.
Sadly Norman passed away in September 2020 at the grand age of 92, followed by Iris in April 2022 aged 95. Since then the family have made it their mission to do the couple that started it all proud.
With each passing year, Suzanne, Johanne, and Katie strive to honour the memory of their late parents by providing exceptional products and service to their loyal customers. Their unwavering dedication and commitment to excellence have solidified Alexanders of Markethill’ position as a pillar of the community into its 70th remarkable year.
Their dedication to quality, attention to detail, and strong family values have been key to their continued success and as a result, Alexanders of Markethill has become a cherished part of the local community, serving generations of customers with care and integrity.
